Akshaya Shanmugam wants to create healthcare that is affordable, accessible and addresses pressing problems — and, at age 30, she’s co-founder and CEO of a company calledThe company’s first product, an app designed to help beat addiction, uses smartphones paired with smartwatches to detect and predict behavior and deliver personalized interventions via alerts and haptic feedback.
While Shanmugam says that she hasn’t had any first-hand problems with addiction, she’s seen many friends and family suffer because they couldn't afford healthcare and weren’t able to get the help they needed.“If we have a way to offer insights into behaviors and biomechanical indicators, we can be more successful at delivering the right kind of intervention at the right moment,” she added.
“We can then figure out a whole bunch of things that can lead to increased success in preventing and treating these larger problems,” Shanmugam explained.Shanmugam was a creative child who always liked taking things apart to see how they worked. Eventually, those interests led her to pursue an electrical engineering degree at Anna University in Chennai, followed by a doctorate in electrical and computer engineering, with a focus on biomedical engineering, at the University of Massachusetts.
As children, Shanmugam said, she and her sister would visit orphanages in Chennai, where they pitched in by donating festival meals and creating fundraising programs.
