Rodgers doesn't believe it was a red card and the reaction of the Atleti players and bench helped sway the ref to change his mind.

The Celtic manager was left disgusted at Daizen Maeda's red card which left his side at the mercy of ruthless Atletico Madrid. Maeda was initially yellow carded by ref Ivan Kruzliak for his challenge on Mario Hermoso, only for VAR official Dennis Higler to demand a review which brought the upgrade. Rodgers believes it's changing the game for the worse as he stated: “It just feels like a computer game now, football. So many visits to the screens and so many influences on a game.

“When you watch the re-run of the action, both players kick each other’s feet, I think the referee saw that in game time. Then he is asked to go and have a look. The first image he sees is not representative of the actual challenge. You plant the seed when the first image he sees is with Daizen’s foot up.

“I think everyone thought the utopia of having this VAR would mean we would lose all these bad decisions in the game. But you could argue that there are even more now. “It would have been easy for Daizen to have gone down and rolled around. So the referee then changes his mind and sends our player off.”
