Pfizer works to speed production of key penicillin as officials see ‘unacceptable American crisis,’ underscoring a need for rapid testing and treatment

The number of babies born with syphilis increased more than 10-fold in the decade ending in 2022, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Tuesday.

“The congenital syphilis crisis in the United States has skyrocketed at a heartbreaking rate,” Dr. Debra Houry, the CDC’s chief medical officer, said in a statement. “New actions are needed to prevent more family tragedies.” Houry said the agency is calling on healthcare providers, public-health systems and communities to take additional steps to connect mothers and babies with needed care.

Pfizer said in a statement that it is increasing and speeding production to meet demand for Bicillin. The drugmaker said it is adding evening shifts at the facility that manufactures the drug and has cut the production time to 50 days from 110 days previously. Pfizer has boosted its Bicillin output by about 30% this year, with a goal of doubling output by the end of next year, the company said.
