For some Eastside residents and local organizers, a proposed research facility at USC's Health Sciences Campus in Boyle Heights is the latest example of a decades-long wave of gentrification spurred in part by the growth of the private university.

Thomas Buchanan, vice dean for research at the USC Keck School of Medicine, said the proposed building is part of the university's commitment to serving local communities. 'We wanted to expand our ability to improve the health address health disparities of our communities through research,' Buchanan said.
