Sean Smyth lost his beloved daughter Eimear Gooderham at just 25 years old after she battled Hodgkin's Lymphoma.

A grieving dad has fumed over the treatment of blood cancer patients, claiming jailed convicts are treated better. Sean Smyth lost his beloved daughter, Eimear Gooderham, at just 25 years old after she battled Hodgkin's Lymphoma.

The furious father said: “It’s a horrendous, horrible place... Prisoners are better treated. First of all you are getting an elevator up 10 flights and your loved one's immune system is totally at risk... and you're in an elevator with maybe 20-30 people.“Eimear went in there on February 22 and didn’t come out until June 27 in a wooden box - five months without feeling a breeze on her skin, without hearing the birds sing, without hearing background noises.

Sean continued: “You can’t criticise all of - but they bring in agency workers and half the time they are sitting sleeping or don’t know what to do. The other problem is come holiday time - Easter for instance - the doctors take Easter holidays so they are away and have skeleton staff." The dad has called on Belfast Trust and health bosses to make changes to how teenagers and young people are treated. Sean said: "Our children deserve better."

A spokesperson for the Belfast Trust said it “acknowledges that the infrastructure on Ward 10 North requires improvement, and we have been working with the Commissioners and the Department of Health for a number of years to secure investment for a new single-bedded unit, which is in progress at present”.
