People in the East Asian country have to be surgically sterilised before they can formally change their gender.

In January 2019, the Supreme Court ruled that the law was constitutional. The Japanese government has been widely criticised and discredited worldwide for its strict law discriminating against transgender people. In their concurring opinion, they wrote:"The suffering that [transgender people] face in terms of gender is also of concern to society that is supposed to embrace diversity in gender identity.

The Human Rights Watch report is based on interviews with 48 transgender people, as well as with lawyers, health providers and academics from 14 prefectures in Japan. "Japan should uphold the rights of transgender people and stop forcing them to undergo surgery to be legally recognised."In a video released to coincide with the Human Rights Watch report, he said he is still listed as female on official documents including his passport, and he cannot register as married to his girlfriend because Japan still does not recognise same-sex marriage.

The politicians in Japan's ruling party have been repeatedly criticised for discriminatory remarks about LGBT people. One of them said"a nation would collapse" if everyone became LGBT.

“People in the East Asian country have to be surgically sterilised” If you’re a man that wants to be a woman, that’s part of the process anyway.
