Mind-body directed therapies for IBS and functional dyspepsia have been shown to be effective and durable. They include gut-directed hypnotherapy , relaxation techniques , behavioral therapy, and/or psychotherapy. Regulora, which consists of unique scripts of approximately 30 minutes in length, is approved by the US Food and Drug Administration , although it's not specifically targeted to gut symptoms. The study aimed to determine whether its beneficial results could be extrapolated to other GDH conditions.
Compliance was good, with at least five of seven sessions completed by 87.5% in the GDH group and 92.3% in the muscle relaxation group. There was no significant difference in the primary endpoint between the groups. Outcomes were also comparable between the groups for the endpoints of stool consistency and frequency, IBS quality-of-life score, missed work time, and willingness to recommend.
Symptoms were assessed using the Patient Assessment of Gastrointestinal Disorders-Symptom Severity Index. As a result, we need to expand our treatment approaches beyond a traditional focus on antispasmodics, fiber, and FODMAP diet. Novel approaches focusing on the gut-brain interaction are effective and can be supplementary to more standard interventions.
