Fewer than half of Australians went to the dentist in the past year, with two million going without or delaying treatment because of cost, a Grattan Institute study shows. Do you think dental treatments should be covered by Medicare?

Opposition Leader Bill Shorten is under pressure to unveil a comprehensive plan to deliver universal dental care, as he makes health a central focus of his campaign to win the coming federal election.

Natalie Pearn, a 39-year-old single mum from Sydney, went to 20 different dentists begging for help after a state government public dental hospital removed her front teeth but did not replace them. Left with a prominent gap in her smile, Ms Pearn tried to find a private clinic that would agree to a payment plan, but without regular work she was unable to secure credit.

The Grattan Institute's Dr Duckett said most spending on dental care came "straight out of patients’ pockets".

Yes they should include it in Medicare . Private doesn’t even cover dental properly.

Maybe, but only if government introduces 1 a sugar tax on beverages 2 mandatory labelling of added sugar details on food Lots of dentists would go out of business if people didn’t bathe their teeth constantly in sugar.

Absolutely ... and this should have occurred years ago

Yes

Yes! Teeth are part of our body. without good dental appearance you can't get a good job. remember the statement get a better job?

Good idea 🤓

Yes

Put a tax on sugary drinks to pay for it rather than have Medicare levy increased

Should be part of an enquiry into the whole health system, which would be public and private systems.

A dentist once told me if patients clean their teeth as well as they do before a visit to the dentist. (and lets face it .we have all done the 10 minute brush right before an appointment ) we wouldn’t have so many problems 😆

500% sure. Need teeth first better overall body Health.

No. Because it will only encourage people to be lazy with their dental hygiene. Unless they r not caused by people being lazy, Eg if they r born with the condition, then yes!

I think dentists' charges should be reined in. Ripoff merchants!

Of course yes

Better regulation on pricing may help. Some dentists could never justify their charges.

🙋🏻‍♀️

Yes

No teeth, no cavities!

I doubt we have enough dentists. Have you ever faced a 6 week wait to start seeing a dentist?

Yes!!

Why is dental different to other medical care?

Had private health for 40 years until I retired, now just can't afford it. So dental visits are a thing of the past. So YES.

Yes..good oral health is imperative for a healthy body..doctors know heart disease starts in the mouth... we spend millions trying to combat heart attacks when by then it is too late

Cheaper and far better quality work in Thailand and Bali.

If Dental was included in Medicare, then our taxes will need to be raised to pay for the extra huge costs. Want more of any services and benefits, higher costs.

Absolutely yes!

That is the wrong question, the question should be. Do you think dental treatments should be paid for by the tax payer? I say no.

Dentist,I can't remember the last time I went.If somehow it became more affordable that would be 👍

Yes.

Dana_Adele Great news for souffs fans Dana_Adele Come on pinky bill! Dana_Adele It is absolutely obscene that those down in Canberra can't do the right thing by Australian ppl to ease the ever-increasing day to day cost of living and even Dental Care. Unfortunately, they just don't have the 'brains' to engage in 'proper' debate even on dental.
