The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) states that around 1.7 million people in the UK who receive employment and support allowance (ESA) could be owed monthly payments of over £500. To qualify for the benefit, individuals must have a disability or health condition that affects their ability to work, and there are 23 medical conditions recognized by the DWP. The 'new-style' ESA is available to those below the state pension age who have worked as an employee or have been self-employed and paid enough National Insurance contributions.

People all across the UK could be owed a monthly payment of more than £500, according to the Department for Work and Pensions .

The 'new-style' ESA is available to those below the state pension age, however, the claimants must have either worked as an employee of have been self-employed while paying enough to contribute to National Insurance. Usually, this must have been done in the previous two or three years, Wales Online reports.
