A convicted murderer's mother, along with 15 other co-conspirators, smuggled drugs, knives, and mobile phones into a UK prison. The elaborate scheme aimed to flood the prison with contraband and launder the profits. Shockingly, the knives were intended to be used against prison staff. The smuggling ring was uncovered when a mental health nursing assistant was arrested with a bag full of drugs and other illegal items.

The mum of a convicted murderer sent knives and other contraband into jail for her son as part of the largest prison smuggling ring ever uncovered.

Shockingly, it was revealed that knives planned to be smuggled into the jail were to be used against prison staff reports the ECHO. A liquid form of the drugs spice was also found in four 500ml Ribena bottles. This haul of drugs alone worth more than £1m, prison experts estimated. A four year investigation found Hatfield was recruited by her inmate lover Joseph Whittingham to play a role in the illegality.

Top news stories today Kieran Murphy, of Liverpool, was also identified as a key suspect who used Hatfield and other defendants to convey drugs, mobile phones and knives into the prison. The investigation took a sinister twist when information was received that knives, which had been ordered at the request of Murphy and another inmate, were intended to be used to harm a prison officer.
