Dozens of US states, including California, New York, Arizona and Indiana are suing Meta Platforms Inc. for harming young people’s mental health and contributing the youth mental health crisis by knowingly designing features on Instagram and Facebook that addict children to the platforms.

Tennessee Attorney General Jonathan Skrmetti announces a lawsuit against the Meta Platforms Inc., the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, during a news conference Tuesday, Oct. 24, 2023, in Nashville, Tenn. The complaint alleges that the company knew of the harmful impact of its Instagram platform on young people.

The suits seek financial damages and restitution and an end to Meta’s practices that are in violation of the law. “We’re disappointed that instead of working productively with companies across the industry to create clear, age-appropriate standards for the many apps teens use, the attorneys general have chosen this path,” the company added.

The use of social media among teens is nearly universal in the U.S. and many other parts of the world.ages 13 to 17 in the U.S. report using a social media platform, with about a third saying they use social media “almost constantly,” according to the Pew Research Center.
