Everton chairman Bill Kenwright, who had suffered from health issues for some time, has passed away

The 78-year-old had suffered with health issues for some time and recently had surgery to remove a cancerous tumour from his liver. A club statement released after the procedure said it had been successful, though complications had led to a period in intensive care. By October 12, the date of the update issued by Everton, he had left hospital and returned home for what was expected to be a long but complete recovery.

Kenwright was active in club matters up until the procedure, including in the summer transfer business and talks surrounding the proposed takeover of Everton by US firm 777 Partners. When confirmation of his death reached Finch Farm on Tuesday , Everton manager Sean Dyche halted training and sent the players home, such was the magnitude of the news to those at the training ground.Kenwright, a lifelong Everton supporter who was born in Wavertree and found success within the arts world, joined the board of directors at Goodison Park in 1989.

On Tuesday evening, the club said: "Everton Football Club is in mourning following the death of Chairman Bill Kenwright CBE, who passed away peacefully last night aged 78, surrounded by his family and loved ones. Everton’s longest serving chairman for more than a century, Bill Kenwright led the club through a period of unprecedented change in English football.

"In his 19 seasons as chairman, the club secured 12 top eight finishes, including a top four finish in 2005, a run to the 2009 FA Cup final and European qualification on 6 separate occasions. The club has lost a chairman, a leader, a friend, and an inspiration. The thoughts and prayers of everyone at Everton are with his partner Jenny Seagrove, his daughter Lucy Kenwright, grandchildren and everybody who knew and loved him.
