A 20-year-old who claimed she had cancer and accepted donations from more than 400 people has learned her fate in court – 10 months after she was arrested.

Madison Russo, from the US state of Iowa, posted on social media sites such as TikTok and Facebook, as well as money-raising platform GoFundMe that she had pancreatic cancer and a leukaemia tumour around her spine that was the size of a football.

“A lot of people have made speculation as to why I did this and how somebody who looked like they had everything together could have such a mess,” she said in court, according to the“I didn’t do this for money or greed. I didn’t do this for attention. I did this as an attempt to get my family back together.”

Russo was given a 10-year suspended sentence, and if she stays out of trouble for the first three years she will never see the inside of a jail cell.
