KUALA LUMPUR: The Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases Act 1988 needs to be amended to give powers to the government to make immunisation mandatory, the Dewan Rakyat was told today.
“It is also important to get buy-ins from all stakeholders. Which is why we need to amend the Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases Act 1988. The immunisation rules need to be drafted again, and all these things take time,” he said during question time today. Yii had earlier asked for the ministry’s stance on making vaccination compulsory for children, following the increase in diphtheria cases reported in Johor a few days ago.
The task force, he said, would also be responsible to prepare a Cabinet paper, which would touch on the types of vaccine, target age of children, parental responsibility, childcare responsibility and vaccine service deliverers.
