Sol Bamba is one of the few players who know that football is not the the be-all and end-all of life.

“It was a difficult time but everyone at Cardiff, but not just Cardiff because I was overwhelmed by the support that I had all around the world really and especially England. “It helped me massively but the main support is your family – the missus, my mum and dad and the kids because it’s tough on them but they were strong for me and that helped me, definitely.”

Despite being cancer-free and back playing football, Bamba admits that it was particularly tough to rebuild hit fitness levels to the required level, saying: “You can work out all you want with a coaching team, but it’s not the same as being match fit at Championship level.
