Shuaib made the disclosure yesterday when he led the Diphtheria National Task Team to Kaduna Diphtheria Treatment Centre at Barau Dikko Teaching Hospital.
“But we also recognize that some of the patients are presenting lately and this is where it is important that the media also step up to increase awareness, to provide information to community members about the existence of this outbreak and the need for patients to present early to health facility so that they can get medication that are required.”
While in Kano, Shuaib said it was too early to declare that there was full control over the outbreak of the diphtheria disease.He however stated that there were early preliminary indications that the outbreak is gradually being controlled, especially in Kano where he was on an assessment tour. “So far we have data that shows that over 10,000 suspected cases of diphtheria have been reported since late last year, we’ve reported over 570 deaths, 7,000 out of the over 10,000 cases have been confirmed.
