The UK government also says we should take the supplement

As the nights begin to get darker, our bodies may not be getting all the nutrients need. However, taking Vitamin D supplements can help with this.

That's why government advice is that everyone should consider taking a daily vitamin D supplement during autumn and winter. Advice to take vitamin D supplements is based on recommendations from the Scientific Advisory Committee on Nutrition who provide independent advice to government based on scientific evidence.

However, people at high risk of not getting enough vitamin D, all children aged one to four, and all babies - unless they're having more than 500ml of infant formula a day - should take a daily supplement throughout the year. How much vitamin D do I need? From about late March/early April to the end of September, the majority of people should be able to make all the vitamin D they need from sunlight on their skin.

According to the British Heart Foundation, a 140g piece of baked salmon contains 10.2 micrograms, a bowl of fortified bran flakes has 1.5 micrograms and an egg has 1.9 micrograms.In the UK, cows' milk is generally not a good source of vitamin D because it is not fortified, as it is in some other countries.Everyone should consider taking a daily supplement containing 10 micrograms of vitamin D during the autumn and winter.
