Australian women would have greater access to cheaper contraception and publicly funded abortions under a federal Labor government. Labor has pledged to use funding deals with states to make clear it expects abortion services to be widely provided in public hospitals, should the party be successful at the May election.
Deputy Labor leader Tanya Plibersek says every Australian woman should be able to access health services where and when they need them. The plan follows revelations women in Tasmania and Cairns have been forced to travel thousands of kilometres for a termination because private providers have closed down. Labor has also vowed to progress decriminalising abortion in states where it is still a criminal offence, and extend scripts for the contraceptive pill.
