October marks the start of National Bullying Prevention Month. It’s considered a time to raise awareness of the harmful impacts bullying can have.

Books recommended to prevent bullying during National Bullying Prevention Month on Monday, October 2, 2023.

“"Bully" doesn’t have a kind word for any of his friends. When the other animals ask him to play, he responds in the way he’s been taught: Chicken! Slow poke! You stink!” — Roaring Brook Press “Ever since Ellie wore a whale swimsuit and made a big splash at her fifth birthday party, she’s been bullied about her weight. To cope, she tries to live by the Fat Girl Rules–like “no making waves,” “avoid eating in public,” and don’t move so fast that your body jiggles. And she’s found her safe space–her swimming pool–where she feels weightless in a fat obsessed world. In the water, she can stretch herself out like a starfish and take up all the room she wants.

“Originally published in 2000,"Stargirl" was instantly embraced and has sold nearly 2 million copies. With its depiction of a nonconformist with a heart of gold, lyrical writing and its charming love story,"Stargirl" quickly asserted itself as a modern classic. The companion novel"Love, Stargirl," written from Stargirl’s perspective, was a similarly smashing success in 2007, with over 400,000 hardcover copies sold.
