The WHO report points to ways that policy makers, health professionals and citizens alike can continue to strengthen health systems.

Aiming for universal health coverage, the World Health Organisation , released some findings from their new report on global health expenditure entitled, “Public Spending on Health: A closer look at global trends.”

Upon dissecting these figures, there is a new trend where there is an increase in domestic public funding for health in low- and middle-income countries and declining external funding in middle-income countries. Such a trend is also good as it is in line with sustainable development goals and universal health coverage.

But government spending only reduces inequities in access when allocations are carefully planned to ensure that the entire population can obtain primary health care. They still rely on external funding for immunisation and pandemics. Nearly 50% of external funding in low- and middle-income countries has been for three diseases ie Tuberculosis, HIV/Aids and Malaria.
