Zoleka Mandela passed away surrounded by family and friends on Monday, a spokesperson said in a statement shared to her official Instagram account.
"On Monday September 18, Zoleka Mandela was admitted into hospital for ongoing treatment for metastatic cancer to the hip, liver, lung, pelvis brain and and spinal cord," the statement read."Recent scans revealed significant disease progression including fibrosis in the lungs as well as several emboli.
Ms Mandela, who was the granddaughter of Nelson Mandela's second wife Winnie, followed in her grandfather's footsteps as an activist after his passing in 2013. Diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of 32, Mandela began documenting her treatment on social media when the illness returned after a period of remission.
