that is is a “red line” in talks with Washington. So what is the truth and how much does chlorine-washed chicken actually matter?US farms are allowed to dip or wash chicken carcasses in water containing chlorine dioxide in order to kill potentially harmful organisms such as E coli, campylobacter and Salmonella on the surface of the meat. This happens after animals have been slaughtered and before the meat is packaged.
Well...I would assume so but I’m not going to read the article.
I’m sorry but how is this even a question? I know it’s a headline to get people’s attention but this isn’t a question of if it’s bad, it’s a question of how bad. vegan vegetarian plantbased veganism vegandiet veganforhealth veganfortheplanet
I don’t want to find out . I just don’t want it simples
Sorry to be that person who highlights the typo, but you've accidentally put the word 'Is' at the start of that headline, and ended it with a question mark rather than a full stop.
And the dumbest question of the day award goes to ..
And if no-one buys it, no-one will stock it
Who would buy it if it said chlorinated on the packaging?
the clue is in the name...
Why is this even a question. Come on....
Chlorate in EU salads/veg. Animal welfare should be NO 1 priority & correct preparation & cooking helps
Are salads & veg washed & bagged in chlorine bad for you?
If the Americans do it it’s got to be okay.
In Tuesday’s Independent, is smoking good for your lungs, is alcohol good for the liver...
Because it sounds so appetizing...chlorinated chicken curry anyone?
POISONING US ONE CHICK AT A TIME!!!!! POOR CHICKS!!!!! HORRIBLE!!!!
Just the thought of it is bad for my health! If you eat meat surely this isn't the way you want our UK farming industry to go? FarmsNotFactories AnimalWelfare 🐷🐄🐏🐥
Ffs what do you think 🤔
The price of meat in the U.K. is cheaper than the USA so not sure how many prime cuts of meat are going to be making the journey but the meat byproducts being shipped over which are then processed in the U.K. are what would worry me.
Hang on this was supposed to be project fear.?
Simple solution - don’t eat it!
Project fear. Have you ever heard of people having any health problems in america?
Don't be silly!!!!
I'm entirely free to not buy any of it, thanks.
This should be printed clearly on poultry’s or on any other foods!? ! Not small print! Giving consumers the option to buy or not to buy! My issue here, is that again it’s the aftermath! And god knows how many of us are carry these infections! Rediculous!
It’s not the chlorine wash itself that’s the problem, it’s that poor animal husbandry in the USA makes it necessary. Anyway, don’t we produce enough of our own so shouldn’t need to import from 1000s of miles away.
LiamFox no thanks I don’t want lowered standards and I certainly don’t want meat washed in chlorine I suspect Americans are bribing you are they..?
QTWTAIY
Why do we wish to potentially lower our standards? Isn't this a great opportunity post-Brexit to say to the USA, we will import your poultry, but you must raise your standards to ours? Taking control of our laws / rules - rather than backing down to the lowest common denominator!
Ever tasted food in the USA? It’s....strange. Food doesn’t taste as it should but Americans don’t realise, as they don’t know any better unless they’ve been abroad.
Is making cheaper lower quality chicken available to a population struggling with rising obesity an example of a ‘Brexit dividend’?
Isn’t weird and horrible enough?
You really have to even pose that question?
I bet the politicians won't touch chlorinated chicken, despite some of them calling for it the loudest.
If it is labelled correctly then we can choose
mrjamesob Who the hell still eats factory farmed “Franken-chicken”?!
The real issue isn't whether chlorine washing makes chicken safe - it is what has been done to the animal that makes it necessary. You also can't wash out antibiotics & pesticide residues.
Check out jmcappiello’s Tweet:
Not as much as slashing a conscious animals throat.
Of course it is, but so is washing the 'meat ' in a Mcdonalds burger with ammonia allegedly.
Poultry industry = the cruellest of industries, that is even before heavy chemicals are introduced to the flesh.
