Specialists have revealed that as many as one million Britons might have gout, a type of arthritis. It is caused by a chemical called uric acid when it forms small crystals, known as tophi, in and around the joints.
Symptoms people should look out for include: sudden severe pain in a joint – usually your big toe, but it can be in other joints in your feet, ankles, hands, wrists, elbows or knees. As well as hot, swollen, red skin over the affected joint, redness may be harder to see on black or brown skin, the Mirror reports.
However, if they are large or very painful then surgery may be required. If it isn't treated, gout attacks could become more frequent and more prolonged and likelihood of permanent joint damage increases.
