Public health advocates in Saskatoon are planning to open a facility where drug users can more safely inject illegal drugs. It would be the first of its kind in Saskatchewan.

Jason Mercredi of AIDS Saskatoon says the majority of the city’s drug users are hooked on crystal meth, but there are also problems with opioids and crack cocaine.

So far, the proposal has gained the support of some key allies – the local police service, an area MP and the city’s mayor. "We will be working with the oversight in terms of ... a community stakeholders group and the police will be involved,” he said.

Shouldn't we be forcing addicts to go to rehab? Is that not what Portugal has done since decriminalizing all drugs? Safe injection sites seem like a very 'bandaid' solution to a much bigger problem.

This is ridiculous, get people off heroine don't invite them in for free needles and supervision, you really aren't dealing with the real issues just applying pressure.

While a supervised place to inject poison is a good start we must do more. How about some TV, snacks and charging stations for their phones? They'll be tired after shooting up, so beds too, obviously. Maybe private suites. If it works, build another! and another! and another!
