Discovery Health Medical Scheme data reveals that members registered for chronic kidney disease more than quadrupled between 2008 and 2022, from about 1 700 to 8 100. Fadhl Solomon, cardiovascular product manager for Pharma Dynamics, said about 2 000 patients were awaiting kidney transplants in the country. Maharaj said before she was diagnosed with fibromuscular dysplasia, she had no illness or symptoms, lived a healthy lifestyle, and was physically fit. She said her surgery took about six hours, and it went well. After the transplant, she spent 12 days in hospital and nine months in isolation at home recovering and giving her body time to adapt to the new kidney and daily immunosuppressive drugs.
