Candace Lawrence is a functional medicine practitioner and owner of Advanced Health of Naperville, specializing in treatments for a various ailments, including sleep trouble and 'gut' issues.

“Functional medicine. Anyone trained in that is trained to look at the entire body, look at the labs and then decide what we’re going to work on first depending on what the patient’s symptoms are or what their goal is,” Lawrence said.“Let’s say you don’t sleep well. Most people do not. ... The first thing I talk about is sleep hygiene. The room you sleep in should be pitch black. You’d be surprised. The power strip everyone has a light on it? Duct tape over that.

“I was so fascinated by it, I flew out and studied with the woman who created that. Then I came back and was doing it on friends. Everybody said, ‘You’re really good at this. You should go back to school.’ ... I got into Oriental medical school, got my master’s and partnered with a chiropractor at Trager Healing Center.”“You have good and bad in there. They’re supposed to be in balance. That’s what keeps us healthy. Well, one dose of antibiotics will wipe out all the bacteria.
