Donna Chisholm, 53, has been offered the pioneering treatment, which would allow her to grow a new nose on her arm

A mum who lost her nose to an aggressive cancer has been offered the chance to have a new one grown on her arm then transplanted on to her face.

She said: “I’m grateful for the artificial implant because it allows me to go to work and do the things I have to do. I think it looks all right from a distance but close up people can tell. The Frenchwoman who was the first in the world to have the treatment lost a large portion of her nose and hard palate during cancer treatment in 2013. Her nasal cavity cancer, squamous cell carcinoma, the same as Donna’s, was treated with radiation and chemo, which saved her life, but left a hole in her face for almost 10 years.

It was suspected to be an ulcer but she was referred to a consultant at Borders General Hospital in June that year. She was told she would receive a biopsy, scheduled for August, but it was not carried out because she had a cold. Prof Dupret-Bories recognised that like the original patient, Donna’s life had been saved and she could function but she had no social life and found it difficult to tolerate the prosthesis. The hospital has had interest from Italy and Poland.
