An Adelaide grandfather says an ongoing wait for a public hospital appointment to learn whether or not he has bowel cancer has caused him so much stress he now sees a psychologist.

"I've got a lot of living to do yet," he said."Why should someone have to die because you can't get in to get a simple procedure? And it's only a 20-minute procedure. So we must be in desperate states," he said.

Ms Hurn said SA Health's guidelines state that people with a positive screening result must have a colonoscopy within four months. Health Minister Chris Picton said he was "concerned" to hear about Mr Wilson's wait time and has asked the Southern Adelaide Local Health Network to look into the case.
