The new forensic pathology digital fingerprint system uses biometrics technology and has access to databases of the department of home affairs, SAPS and the National Credit Bureau to identify dead bodies.The launch of a new forensic pathology service digital fingerprint system, meant to address the huge backlog in the health department's forensic unit, means it will now take mere minutes to determine the identity of the unknown bodies.

The introduction of the digital fingerprint systems stands as a transformative milestone in the field of forensic pathology, brought forth by the visionary initiative of this government to digitise Gauteng The MEC said the system enables the department to capture and store digital fingerprints securely, creating a centralised and comprehensive database for comparison and matching against existing records. The system will also improve the quality of the fingerprints in decomposed bodies, as it was harder in the past to identify an overly kept body before the was introduced.

Through the future digitisation of services, administrative bottlenecks will be dismantled, allowing for smoother workflows, reduced waiting times, and enhanced overall customer experience.
