The NT opposition says compulsory alcohol treatment should be reintroduced in Alice Springs as a long-term measure to address chronic alcoholism, but support workers say mandating treatment is a poor motivator for change.

But Drug and Alcohol Services Australia chief executive Eloise Page said it was not resourced for such programs and urged support for new solutions."They need to want to make change."NT Police Minister Kate Worden this week scoffed at the Opposition's announcement, arguing history showed such programs "don't work".in response to a wave of alcohol-fuelled violence and property damage in the town, are set to expire at the end of July.

"Until we understand that we have an alcohol problem in the Northern Territory, things are gonna remain the same."
