President Michael D. Higgins is to undergo surgery next week for back pain, acording to a statement released by Áras an Uachtaráin.
However, following the procedure, the President intends to continue to carry out his constitutional duties, including consideration of legislation. The statement said that President Higgins would carry out these duties both from Áras an Uachtaráin and from his home in Galway, suggesting he will spend some of the recovery period at his own home.
While the statement has played down the urgency of the procedure, it comes inconveniently at the busiest time for the President, when a large number of bills come across his desk from the Oireachtas, as the Dáil nears the end of its term and breaks for summer recess. “Having this vital work concentrated into four weeks of the year strikes me as being less than ideal, and I believe, unnecessary,” Higgins said in summer of 2021.
