CAPE TOWN - Public health experts have expressed their concern over the health impacts associated with the world’s changing climate. The World Health Organization gave an update on how severe weather conditions will impact public healthcare.
"Over the coming months, we expect a range of extreme weather events, including droughts, floods, hurricanes and heatwaves, all of which harm human health," said WHO Director-General Dr Tedros Ghebreyesus. Ghebreyesus stressed that prolonged drought in the greater Horn of Africa has already caused a wave of hunger, migration and disease and is putting a major strain on health services.
"This year, nearly 60 million are fully insecure across the greater Horn of Africa, which includes seven countries -Djibouti, Ethiopia, Kenya, Somalia, South Sudan, Sudan and Uganda."' World Health Organization July 5, 2023
