This spring, Krista Reid learned there was no pediatric gastroenterologist in the province who could treat her son.

After that first appointment, Reid was told to take her son back to Edmonton every two months for followup care. He needs teststo see how well his treatment is working and if he’s having flare-ups; his medication might need adjustments.this month, Reid was told her appointment had been cancelled. Alberta Health told her that Saskatchewan wasn’t going to pay for Casten’s out-of-province treatment, she said.

“I’m told he’s going to be starting soon,” she said. “However, he doesn’t have room for Casten on his waiting list. So I have no idea whenShe feels like she and Casten have been left without any options, she said. — either by bringing more specialists into the province, or by reaching an agreement with Alberta or Manitoba that would allow children to get treatment in neighbouring provinces.
