The number of ADHD referrals to the Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service has more than doubled in 15 years.

ADHD Ireland will tell an Oireachtas Committee that child and adolescent referrals have increased by 55 per cent. The charity says there's been a noticeable increase since the Covid-19 pandemic, and has most likely been driven by growing social media awareness. The Mental Health Subcommittee will also hear how community mental health services are being 'overwhelmed' by adults looking for assessments and treatment.

Research published last year by UCD, the HSE, and ADHD Ireland, found half of all adults with the condition have self-harmed in the past, while a fifth have tried to take their own life.
