One of the district’s strongest health partnerships is with MetroHealth, which provides basic health services at CMSD schools that would typically be done at a doctor’s office.

A mobile dental clinic visits Almira Elementary School.CLEVELAND, Ohio – Mia walks into Almira Elementary School’s front office, trying not to panic as she rubs her left eye and asks if Ms. Tiffany Mayhugh, Almira’s on-site nurse, is there. To Mia’s relief, she is.

The concept of integrated health is seeded in providing care for both primary and behavioral health in a way that’s coordinated and collaborative. At CMSD, that translates to a robust web of internal personnel, external partnerships and a prioritization of awareness and education. “If we’re not taking care of ourselves mentally, it might affect us physically, which can impact learning,” Mayhugh said. “We want to make sure we’re taking care of every aspect of our scholars to help them be the best versions of themselves, so they can focus on their education.”

These services are provided at more than a dozen district schools each month for free and are available to all students with signed consent forms. However, the school needs to have forms from at least 30% of its students for a mobile clinic to come. Almira has not reached that threshold. The form makes it so parents can sign one document that allows students to receive health services throughout their entire time at CMSD.

The department recently held its first annual large-scale, two-day health event where it showcased the medical providers and agencies that work with the district so students and parents could become acquainted with the available services and ask any questions all in one place.
