The main driver of the poor air quality is PM 2.5 particles, which are tiny particles in the air that can come from sources including vehicle exhaust, burning of other fuels and wildfires.
The Harrisburg region weather forecast from the National Weather Service on Tuesday noted the presence of “widespread haze” and “patchy smoke.” Smoke from wildfires burning in Canada in Quebec and Ottawa has been impacting the northeast, with the smoke so prevalent it’s visible from the International Space Station.
Meanwhile, the prolonged dry spell has put central Pennsylvania under its own red flag warning for wildfires, with dry vegetation, low humidity, wind and possibility of lightning driving up the risk of fast-spreading fires. Unfortunately, the forecast for central Pennsylvania as of early Tuesday showed no short-term prospect of drenching rain, although it does contain the possibility of thunderstorms and lightning that could trigger fires.
