Gov. Abbott signs bill making Texas largest state to ban transgender health care for minors

Gov. Greg Abbott signed a bill that bans transition care for transgender minors, making Texas the largest state to do so., which will take effect Sept.

Republicans have questioned the research behind the interventions and warned that the risks are too high for parents to make what can amount to life-altering medical decisions for their children. Such health care decisions should be left to physicians and their patients and patients' families, they said.

A coalition of civil rights legal groups — Lambda Legal, the American Civil Liberties Union, ACLU of Texas and Transgender Law Center — have already pledged to sue over the legislation.
