Tammy Ishee and Teri Dunn open a franchise of Special Strong, a company that provides...

She and Dunn decided to check it out, and they met the local franchise’s owner Mike Lutey. “I stood there and had a big smile on my face,” Ishee recalled. “We thought it would be great to have for our daughter.”

In November, they went to Dallas to meet Special Strong’s founder, Daniel Stein, to determine if they would be a match to start their own franchise. As an adult, Stein met with a mentor, who shared a divine vision of Stein opening a fitness facility for those with disabilities. “I would have never thought of it,” Stein recalled. “At the time, I was a banker.”

Then, there was a checklist of items to get ready for the business, from starting the website to getting the word out. It could be building strength or weight loss. Perhaps a client is simply looking for a social opportunity or a means to stay active. “Our goal is to offer a safe, judgment-free place where people can feel comfortable and have all the equipment and resources they need. We’re on the same page,” she said.
