Each cigarette will feature a warning, with phrases including “Poison in every puff” and “Health Canada said the regulation will be under way by 1 August, with king-sized cigarettes carrying the warning in store by April 2024. Regular-sized cigarettes and all tobacco products, including cigars, will carry the messaging by the following April.
“Tobacco use continues to kill 48,000 Canadians each year,” said Carolyn Bennett, Canada’s associate minister of health. “This bold step will make health warning messages virtually unavoidable, and together with updated graphic images displayed on the package, will provide a real and startling reminder of the health consequences of smoking.
“We are taking action by being the first country in the world to label individual cigarettes with health warning messages”.
