A study in the Canadian Medical Association Journal said the use of cannabis among pregnant women in Ontario is increasing and the medical community believes people need to be better educated on the potential harms for pregnant women.
In real terms, the study said the actual increases were small, but the "findings highlight the need to consider interventions to reduce cannabis use during pregnancy". Preterm Births The study also found "pregnant people with acute care for cannabis use had greater odds of having received acute care for hyperemesis gravidarum during their pregnancy than those without acute care for cannabis use."
"Accumulating evidence suggests that cannabis use during pregnancy is associated with adverse perinatal and neonatal outcomes, including stillbirth, preterm birth and neonatal morbidity and mortality. Evidence also increasingly supports associations between cannabis use during pregnancy and neurologic and developmental disorders later in childhood, including autism spectrum disorder," the authors wrote.
