Shauntel Garvey met her Reach Capital cofounders while working at the nonprofit fund NewSchools. It helped Garvey focus her investing thesis around helping learners of all ages and backgrounds.
It was a big leap of faith, but they decided to go for it."We wanted to also grow with them and expand our impact," said Garvey. She grew up the daughter of a college professor at Elon University in North Carolina, and education was always emphasized in her household. It was a way for Garvey's mother to move up economically and build a better life for her family, and she always emphasized its importance to her children.
But her family's dedication to education always stuck with her. Even during her time at P&G, she spent her free time running after school programs in Ohio focused on academic enrichment programs, and found that this work was where she got energy. In the early days of Reach, it was tough to fundraise. The team was also often scrambling to help their portfolio companies from NewSchools raise fresh capital.
