The number of pregnant people who required hospital treatment for cannabis use in Ontario has almost doubled since legalization in 2018, a new study shows.

: “Given what we know about the short- and long-term effects of cannabis on fetuses and babies, it is safest for women to avoid using cannabis while pregnant and while breastfeeding.”2019 U.S. study

And while the observed increase in hospital visits could be related to more people being willing to disclose cannabis use after legalization, Myran said substantial changes in self-reporting were unlikely. “And for most people, the morning sickness comes before the cannabis use … we found the strength of that association became stronger after legalization.”
