A study in BMCCancer finds that prognosis of patients with multiple myeloma has markedly improved since 2000 due to therapeutic advances. With improving prognosis, clinicians should pay attention to second primary malignancies and cardiovascular risks.

]. Consistent with our findings, an analysis of data from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results Program found a proportion of non-myeloma cancer deaths in MM patients of 5.4% and showed a more than twofold increase in the risk of death from cardiovascular diseases in MM patients compared to the general population [].

The strength of this study is the use of population-based data from one of Europe’s largest cancer registries, providing survival data of patients treated in Germany, where 90% of patients belong to one of the statutory health insurances, which in principle ensures equal access to cancer therapy. Using the relative survival approach, we were able to generate evidence about cancer-specific survival in addition to overall survival.

We recognise that our work has some limitations. First, for periods back into the past, we had to rely on data from a subset of the cancer registry only, and survival estimates were based on limited numbers of patients, especially when age stratification was applied. Second, as information about stage at diagnosis, prognostic factors, and therapy is incomplete in the registry dataset, evidence about the impact of new therapies on survival is merely indirect [].

The influence of weight on psychosocial well-being in diabetes - BMC PsychologyBackground Individuals with diabetes experience a wide variety of psychosocial responses to their illness due, in part, to the nature of type 1 and type 2 diabetes. Variation in patient weight may play a central role in these differences, yet its influence on psychosocial variation is largely unknown. The current study investigates the relationship between patients’ perceived weight status and aspects of psychosocial well-being among individuals with type 1 diabetes (T1D) and type 2 diabetes (T2D). Methods Individuals who were diagnosed with type 1 or type 2 diabetes were assessed via an online survey from the Diabetes, Identity, Attributions, and Health Study. Participants were categorized into a lower v. higher weight status group based on their self-reported perceived weight. Analyses of covariance were conducted to assess differences in measures of disease onset blame, diabetes stigma, and identity concerns among diabetes type and perceived weight status. Covariates included in our models were gender, age, education, and time since diagnosis. Bonferroni correction was used for post-hoc tests to assess any significant interactions found in our models. Results Findings indicated that weight moderates multiple psychosocial outcomes pertinent to illness experience. Those with T2D and lower weight blamed themselves less for their disease onset, while those with higher weight felt blamed more for their disease onset by others, regardless of diabetes type. Individuals with T1D and higher weight were more frequently and more concerned about being mistaken for having the other disease type (i.e., T2D) compared to those with lower weight. Conclusions Weight is a key influence on the psychosocial outcomes for people with diabetes, but it operates differently in type 1 versus type 2 diabetes. By further examining the unique interaction between disease type and weight status we may be able to improve psychological well-being among affected individuals of all sizes.

Sexual violence against women remains problematic and highly prevalent around the world - BMC Women's HealthBackground Sexual violence is far more prevalent in most societies than is usually suspected in daily life. However, no study has systematically summarized the global prevalence rate and the major outcomes of sexual violence against women. Methods We directed a wide-raging search in the PubMed, Embase, and Web of Science, catalogs since the beginning to December 2022 for relevant reports about the incidence of sexual fighting touching females. The occurrence frequency was assessed with a random-effects model. The heterogeneity was estimated with I 2 values. Differences by research features were assessed over subgroup evaluation and meta-regression. Results A total of 32 cross-sectional studies were included (a total of 19,125 participants). The pooled sexual violence rate was 0.29 (95% CI = 0.25–0.34). Subgroup analyses found that there was a higher rate of sexual violence against women in 2010–2019 period (0.33, 95% CI = 0.27–0.37), developing countries (0.32, 95% CI = 0.28–0.37), and interview (0.39, 95% CI = 0.29–0.49). The analysis found that more than half of women (0.56, 95% CI = 0.37–0.75) had post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) after experiencing sexual violence, and only a third of women considered seeking support (0.34, 95% CI = 0.13–0.55). Conclusions Nearly one out of every three (29%) women around the world has been a victim of sexual violence in their life. This current study investigated the status and characteristics of sexual violence against women, which could provide an important reference for police and emergency health services management.
