PUTRAJAYA: The Environment Department has prepared several measures to address instances of open burning that, among others, deteriorates air quality and create haze that can jeopardise public health.

It said during the South-west Monsoon from May to September, there will be thunderstorms and heavy rain which will decrease towards the tail end, with most states experiencing more days without rain.

The Environment Department said it was undeniable that emissions from industrial activities and motor vehicles also contribute to air deterioration, especially in the Klang Valley and industrial areas, but its analysis and records showed that open burning of biomass is the main cause of local haze. It said stern action would be taken in places where fires occur. It will identify landowners of the areas involved so legal action can be taken under the Environmental Quality Act 1974.

According to the Environment Department, public awareness campaigns will be actively held via community programmes as well as social media and the media, especially for farmers and villagers against open burning activities during hot and dry weather.
