The agency’s pronouncement comes after the World Health Organization announced that the viral disease, which inflicted havoc across the world for three years, is no longer a global health emergency.
WHO Director General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus on Friday announced that “Covid-19 is now an established and ongoing health issue which no longer constitutes a public health emergency of international concern .” It was on Jan. 30, 2020 that the WHO declared that Covid-19, which was known then as the novel coronavirus, constitutes a PHEIC–the highest level of alarm under international law. The WHO then characterized Covid-19 as a pandemic on March 11, 2020. To recall, this coronavirus infection was first detected in December 2019 in Wuhan, China.
