The declaration that COVID is no longer a global health emergency is an historic moment.
In itself, it is a bureaucratic step. When the WHO declares a Public Health Emergency of International Concern it requires countries to formally report statistics, take steps to protect citizens and travellers, and conduct surveillance for the virus. But in places with poorly resourced healthcare systems, it could free up capacity to deal with the other major disease threats including tuberculosis, HIV and malaria which have continued throughout the pandemic - 650,000 people alone died with HIV in 2021.
"The World Health Organisation's move to end COVID-19 as a Public Health Emergency of International Concern is thanks to effective vaccinations and treatments which have greatly reduced the risk of severe disease and death from infection around the world.
