How a Texas farm girl went from intern to CEO of a logistics startup with $53 million in funding before the age of 40

She told Insider writing periodic resignation letters was key to her success. On the path from unpaid intern to CEO, Heather Salomon-Hoover wrote four resignation letters. "Every time I have taken the time to write all that out, then I just get clarity on what I need to do to find a way through," she said.

After studying communications in college, Salomon-Hoover started working for uShip in its Austin headquarters — two rooms and a ping pong table — in 2005 as an unpaid intern tasked with public relations. Salomon-Hoover started to feel like a leader by 2009 when she formally came on staff at uShip. She became the go-to source for institutional knowledge as the company grew.

"I kindly just add in, 'Oh, I'm a farmer's daughter. I understand.' But I always feel like there's a way to break the ice and sort of remove the barrier and just get the job done," she said.
