Former Gauteng health MEC Qedani Mahlangu said she was unaware that licences issued to NGOs that housed mental health patients were fake. She claimed she was not directly involved in the issuing of the licences.
Former Gauteng health MEC Qedani Mahlangu has told the Life Esidimeni inquiry she was unaware that fraudulent licences had been issued to NGOs housing mental health patients.
"I had no knowledge of licences being issued fraudulently because Dr Manamela and her team had been doing this work for a long time. I had no reason or doubt to believe that they would not do what is right for the patients.""Those oaths are binding in people's conscience. The people I worked with were people of authority and ethics. I had no reason to believe they could issue licences [fraudulently].
She said she had met the team responsible for the Life Esidimeni project"whenever I was available", but that meeting them regularly was impossible due to her demanding portfolio. I met with the team whenever it was necessary. When they requested a meeting, and I was unavailable, the HOD was always available to deal with the issues. It would take a superhuman being to do all these things. I needed not to sleep if I had to do some of the things it is suggested I should have done.
