The public health emergency is ending May 11. Here's what you need to know.

The emergency has been extended repeatedly, but expires May 11 and won’t be renewed. President Joe Biden signed in April a bill ending a separate national emergency declaration. Vaccine are considered a preventive health service under most private insurance plans and will be covered without a co-pay, HHS said. COVID shots will also continue to be covered under Medicare Part B and Medicaid.

Medicaid will continue to cover treatments without costs to patients through Sept. 30, 2024, but after that, coverage and costs may vary by state.Coverage mandates for COVID testing will change when the emergency ends. Private insurers will no longer be required to cover tests at no cost to patients, as they had been. That applies to both over-the-counter rapid tests and lab tests, HHS said.
