A look at five places outside Metro Vancouver to retire with a focus on housing costs, weather, health services, politics and activities.

Politically the town is NDP — with the B.C. NDP representing the riding of Boundary-Similkameen — and federally it’s NDP in South Okanagan-West Kootenay. Midway has a skating arena, large open grass fields, mining history and a seniors’ centre. It is also a one-hour drive west to Osoyoos and some great wine country.FacebookNelson is two hours east of Midway and sits on Kootenay Lake with mountains all around.

It has a temperate climate with mild winters and moderate summers and is already a well-established retirement community drawing people from across Canada. Politically, Qualicum Beach is NDP, provincially in the Parksville-Qualicum riding and federally in Courtenay-Alberni.Photo by Hand-outKaslo is in the West Kootenay region and is a relatively isolated but stunningly beautiful community of 1,000.Article content

The downtown area and most of the housing is on alluvial flats and it’s a one-hour drive to Nelson if you need a hospital. Kaslo doesn’t have any new custom built condos yet, and there are three-bedroom homes available for around $500,000.
